A New Perspective

Reading They Called Us Enemy reminded me of how much hate there was in the world towards different ethnic groups. These ethnic groups suffered racism throughout their lifetime. For example, George Takei experienced racism but never realized it as a kid because he was so young and did not understand the world he lived in. In addition, one of the panels showed the lives of African Americans were also not too great. During these scenes, I felt like helping those people and sympathized. I put myself in their shoes and wondered what I would’ve done.

Listening to The Play Mountain Podcast made me realize that WWII impacted the lives of every Japanese American living in the United States. It ruined the chance for Isamu Noguchi to explain his ideas to government officials. Even when he was designated to design internment camps, his ideas were rejected because of his race. Even though that happen, after the war he sculpted and designed different items that impacted today’s playground.

During the AAPI activity, I discovered and learned more about Asian Hate-Crime. I lived during that time but never went to learn more about it until now. With this video, I learned the stories of Asian families and what they did to reduce Asian hate.

Even though Asian and African Americans suffered, they pushed themselves and worked harder for a better future. They’ve gone through abuse, racism, and hardships to help us move on to what we are now.
