My comic “Ghost Town” is based on the Ted Talk “The Decline of Play” presented by Peter Gray. Gray’s main concern is that the decline of children playing outside without parent guidance is negatively impacting children’s social and emotional skills. He states, “The world is becoming a worse place for children, but a better one for adults.” Back then, children had what Gray calls, a “hunter gatherer” education. They were free to make choices and explore without any supervision. It forced children to gain confidence in their decision making and take care of themselves. In my own childhood, I felt an absence of independency to play however I wanted. Now as a teen, I realized that I was missing a hunter-gatherer education. The purpose of sharing his ideas and illustrating my comic to show others what kids’ today are missing in their development. In my comic, I show a common theme of the absence of children outside. They are nowhere to be seen outside houses, streets, or playgrounds. Each setting is made to look desserted to further my statement. The upset-looking ghosts flying around the town are kids from the past generations looking for children to play with, but the children are nowhere to be found. The computer at the last panel hints today’s children are inside using electronics. My lack of colors indicate a depressing and desolate tone. It also makes the blue stand out. I only used the blue for the sky to represent a sample of how the children’s hunter gatherer life used to be and the computer screen to represent the lives children live behind the screen in this modern age. The game phrase “GAME OVER” has a negative connotation to end the comic with an unsatisfied feeling. Hopefully, Gray’s ideas reach school boards and teachers to improve the development of children. We need our children to lead healthy and aspiring lives, because they are the future.
