Hi my name is Alec and I have read the very intriguing but sad comic called “They Called Us Enemy”. This book is about when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and how it affected the Japanese in the US. This is all shown through the eyes of a little Japanese boy with a newborn brother and a sister. Through the bombing of Pearl Harbor Americans were fearful of another traumatizing attack. But because this was a war crime serious measures were taken. But some went too far because in February 19, 1942 all Japanese-Americans became “criminals” and thrown in interment camps. These camps lasted 5 years, every Japanese-American lost 5 precious years to legalized racism. Even before the law was passed to lock up all Japanese people began to put signs saying “No Japanese” in front of stores and completely shutting out people that had nothing to do with the bombing. Because the comic is shown through the little boy it is noticeable that he did not quite understand what was happening and why he had to abruptly move out of his small home his parents worked so hard for. It must have been so difficult for the Japanese during this time, if you were to put yourself in their shoes how do you think you would have reacted to someone kicking you out of your own home. Let’s not let this tragic responce to tragedy to go to waste. We as a nation should come together to never let this happen again.
