Twisted Realities: AI’s arising in human life.

Ir’s the 21st century, where electronic devices are at its peak. Cellphones have evolved to the point where they are part of our daily life. You can call someone from across the world with your phone in less than a minute, and send messages thousands of miles to other people. That’s not the only thing as well, devices such as monitors, chrome books, laptops, etc, are now included in many jobs, and even in common aspects of school life.

So, what does this mean for the generations from this century?

Things from the past, no longer apply to the 21st generation. As a child, and a student, don’t you ever get that annoyed feeling when your parents try to downplay your current school stress with, “Well in the past, we had to use plain old books to “look up” everything.” Well unfortunately for parents, that argument is invalid because we live in a society where the internet is in our fingertips. This accentuates the fact that we are a generation that is going through this alone because our parents lived in a generation without technology and the fact that because we have so much information, school work has evolved and teachers give more comprehensive learning for students. Parents will also say, “Get off that device and go play outside.” Well, as student in a technology based society, we simply can’t do that. There is nothing to do outside. Prior to the 21st century, there were activities to do outside so children can go play and socialize, but we simply can’t do that anymore. If we go outside, there is nothing to do, and also no one to play with because fellow children will also be in their house on their computers.

This opens the door to the world of artificial intelligence, or AI tools. People rely on AI tools because of its efficiency. For example, a student can write an essay for couple days to a week, but an AI? An AI can do it in less than thirty seconds. This results in students beginning to use AI to complete their school work or do their work for them. In all honesty, it is inevitable for AI to not be included in future schooling, whether through the students using it or if the teachers are beginning to use it. As a fellow student, I can not blame my peers if they want to rely on AI for help. School work is hard, AP classes are hard, lack of motivation is prominent, and you need your sleep. AI can help lessen the stress through each completed assignment. Of course, school life is not the only part of life the AI has affected.

As I grow up and deepen my knowledge, I can’t help but be scared for my future. AIs and robots are also beginning to be introduced into restaurants and other workplaces. According to a Forbes article, “the World Economic Forum estimated that AI will replace some 85 million jobs by 2025.” The restaurant Kura, a revolving sushi restaurant, has a robot deliver refreshments and small plates, and if you go to grocery stores, helpers are sometimes replaced with robot helpers. Some believe this is inevitable, that as technology advances, AIs replace the jobs that humans had. AIs have already affected workplaces, making me scared to live in an AI based society. What if my job gets taken over by an AI? How will I pay for my bills? My necessities? It’s honestly frightening to think about how in a couple of decades how intertwined AI and economics will be.
