The Allure of Yokohama Station

Do you like mystery? How about a fiction with an alluring world, with secrets to uncover and twists to be unraveled? If so, then you should read Yokohama Station.

The world of Yokohama Station revolves around an interesting concept: a “living” subway station. Throughout the manga, the characteristics and true nature of the station remain shrouded in mystery, with only a few details to work with. The story revolves around the main character, Hiroto, who’s an outcast to those living within the station. He ventures forth in order to help aid one of his elders back in his village, and in order to do so, receives a special ticket to enter the station. It is Hiroto’s duty to face the unknown, in order to save Higashiyama.

With art by Gonbe Shinkawa, who produced Wolf Never Sleeps, and Tatsuyuki Tanaka, who you may know as one of the key animators from the critically acclaimed anime move Akira, you can’t expect the art to disappoint. In case you’ve never heard of either of the two (dare not you say you’ve never heard of Akira), then hopefully their ratings on MyAnimeList (a widely popular anime and manga database website) at least provide a little bit of reference as to the quality of their work. If not for the thousands of people who’ve reviewed these works, then let it be me to say that neither Yokohama Station, nor any of these other works are a waste of time at all.

I won’t spoil the manga any more here, but I will say that if you like the world-building elements in manga like Fire Force–manga with mysterious phenomena and worlds which gradually unfold–then you should definitely give this manga a shot. The manga has an awe-inspiring artstyle, and definitely has a solid plot which keeps you wanting to spill the secrets at every turn. The mysteries of Yokohama Station are just waiting to be unraveled, both by Hiroto, and you.
