Picking the “Perfect” Friend

Friends are like the family we chose. They stick together no matter how big or small the issue is and are there to support one another. Life becomes more enjoyable when around them and they are there to provide support. Without friends life becomes dull and less colorful, research shows that friendships help provide meaning in life and tend to live longer than others. Nonetheless, when surrounded by fake friends the results are quite the opposite.

This is similar to picking a perfect watermelon, you must inspect it first before committing to buying it. Similar to how before you commit to being a person’s friend, you first must get to know them better.

“A good friend is like a four leaf-clover: hard to find and lucky to have”

-Irish Proverb

What Makes a “Perfect” Friend?

I surveyed some of my friends and asked them about their opinions on what makes a “perfect” friend.:

  • Someone who is reliable
  • Trustworthy and are able to keep their word
    • Trust is a building block for every friendship… without trust you have nothing
  • One that is willing to listen and support you
    • Is there for you
  • Someone who accepts you for you
    • Doesn’t judge you for who you are
  • Is positive
    • We all have our ups and downs but a good friend should be able to spot if you are down and try to cheer you up
  • Honest
  • Someone who makes you laugh
    • Entertains you
  • Someone who isn’t toxic
    • Fun to be around
    • Is a good role model

Although no human being is perfect, a “perfect” friend should be able to improve and strive every day to become a better friend. A good friend should also be there for you during your bad and good times, not only for your good times. Friends can really impact your life depending on the friends you meet. This can be positive or negative depending on who it is. Therefore you should always try finding the “perfect” friend.
