Why You Need a Break

Do you wanna take a break?

Everyday, all the time, we work. Our bodies work. Our minds work. Schoolwork, homework, paperwork, whatever. We rinse and we repeat every single day with just one goal in mind.

A break.

It’s seven in the morning and I’m ready for school to end. It’s Sunday night and I’m ready for the weekend. School begins tomorrow and I’m ready for summer. I’m tired of waking up and going to school for hours just to go home and do homework for even more hours afterwards.

I wish I was out taking a hike or traveling the world.

But alas, you need money to survive. And to make money, you need a job. And to get a job, you need an education. A good one.

But honestly, what’s the point?

Is it really worth it if you spend all day doing work, work, and nothing but work, just for the hope that one day, in the far future, you’ll retire and live happily? Who knows when or if you’re gonna get there? One day, you’ll try to look back at these moments and find that you won’t remember anything. Why? Because you aren’t making any memories.

Make time for the things you love. Who cares if that assignment is due tomorrow morning? Take a minute. Pet your cat. Listen to your favorite song. Eat your favorite for dinner.

My cat, Rico, has no qualms with a nice break.

It sucks to reminisce about childhood memories and think, “things will never be that way again.” And yeah, it won’t be. Unless you do something about it. You can’t just live every day sulking and sighing about what’s done and what could be.

You have to take the initiative. Invite friends out. Don’t have any? Make new ones. Create moments that you’ll look back on one day. Have some fun.

Things may never be the same as they were years ago, when you were five years old and playing tag in the neighborhood, or opening Santa’s presents, or waiting thirty minutes to get back into the pool after eating.

Or so you think, really. Actions don’t have ages. As long as you’re still breathing, you have the capability to have fun. To laugh so hard your stomach hurts. To sit back and enjoy life and the moment which you are living in.

To just take a break.
