Jealousy, Jealousy

As you get older, it is so easy to compare yourself to others. You start to get more and more jealous of what others have, look like, act like, and so much more. This mindset of being constantly jealous of others is not talked about enough on how mentally dangerous it actually is. When you compare yourself, you forget what you have and just want more.

It is always “I want that because she has it,” or “She gets anything she wants it’s not fair!” Us as humans never take the time to appreciate what we have. In the story Othello by William Shakespeare, there are many examples of jealousy among the characters. Mostly the jealousy came from Iago who wanted Othello’s success, career, wife, and everything else. Because of this jealousy, Iago is constantly trying to ruin Othello’s life. This can be shown when he says, “Oh, beware, my lord, of jealousy! It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock. The meat it feeds on.” A lot of insecure people will try and make others feel the way that they feel by pushing their own insecurities onto them. This is what Iago is showing here and in the entire story of Othello.

Especially growing up in this generation, it is really hard to stay updated on the new trends and fit in. You are constantly getting compared to others by your parents, peers, and even yourself. It is like if you were to compare completely different things such as Taylor Swift albums and flavors of your favorite drink. Those are completely opposite things yet I still compared them. This is just like how we compare ourselves to others. That I found is mine, and many others root of jealousy.

Have you ever heard something that somebody has said about you and thought, who is making this up?! Being a teenager in this day and age means that there is drama constantly that makes you question your friendships. You could do one thing wrong and it feels like the rest of the world thinks you belong in the circles of hell. The way that we compared the characters of Othello in the “Circles of Hell” assignment shows how we can be quick to judge others and how much we compare people and ourselves. This also proves that we can be completely wrong about people’s lives, so don’t be so easy to get mad or jealous, because for all we know they could be struggling even more.
