How Prejudice is Poison

Some people think lonely equals alone yet in Othello you can beg to differ. In the play Othello, the main character Othello feels lonely and like an outsider because of his race. This in fact isn’t true as everyone treats him with the utmost respect and like any other person would. In his head he believes this but remember, it’s all in the head. This is a common belief as people think they’re lonely when they’re alone but it’s all in their head, you are still capable of being completely happy when you’re alone or an outcast in a group. Othello, a venetian general in Cyprus is always held as the highest authority in his army yet he feels the least the least trusted. You most likely have felt this way in a group at some point as well, especially regarding if you are a bit different from everyone else. However, you should find comfort and happiness in this as being different is something that you can’t control but a mindset you can change. Othello couldn’t change his race to fit it but he could change his mindset to be comfortable, this could’ve helped him in his demise and fall from grace.

In the haunting pursuit, racism activity, the song contains a line that talks about being looked down upon because of his race and he then gets treated differently because of it. The line in the song “SHOES” by Lupe Fiasco goes

“With touching signs of equality to match

White kid at the first let me go first ‘cause I was black

Said it was only right

He was used to having head starts his entire life”

The line demonstrates how the singer of this song felt inferior. The mindset of the person who let him go line first was completely different while the artist saw this as pity while the person saw it as kindness. You could argue the artist felt isolated or lonely here as he was the only one while getting the shoes that was treated this way by another person getting shoes. After all, why was he being treated differently for something he could not control?

In the Honor killings activity, women were treated severely unfairly as they were a group of people that were also treated differently because of their genetics. They did not have a choice in their genetics therefore why should they be treated so harshly? In the activity, the writing states, “Violence against women has been documented throughout history. Most of the ancient civilisations – among them the Assyrian, Roman and Sumerian – had penal codes that condemned “women adulterers and their partners” while allowing men to publicly have mistresses with little or no punishment at all.” Why should women be mistreated with prejudice when men in these times did the exact opposite of what women weren’t supposed to do. This can also be related to racism as the previous examples were treated unfairly due to prejudice and no past experiences.
