The balance of Selfishness

Selfishness is often not a good look and does not go well with other people. Hogging the ball in soccer or slamming your bat in baseball are visuals of being selfish as you care more about yourself and what happened than others. But there are benefits to being selfish as it can help you get certain things done that others would not be able to help you with. According to Dan Harris “Wise selfishness doesn’t mean I can’t pursue my own personal ambitions.” which shows that being selfish can allow you to go after your own ambitions and desires but there needs to be a balance. Like in Othello Iago’s selfish ambitions made him jealous and angry that he did not get a promotion to the point of manipulating his boss. That took it too far and Iago did not have a balance when it came to his ambitions he cared so much about himself that he did not care about others’ reactions. Or like with the dunning Krueger effect, people think they have more privilege and think only of themselves because they think they are better than everybody. A good example of having a balance of selfishness is what I have seen in baseball where people get happy when they do good or get a good hit. Once this action takes place they don’t talk badly about their teammates they encourage them and if they themselves fail they wait for the time when they can make it up. Having this balance creates good relations and doesn’t make somebody seem like a “bad guy” if they are selfish. Selfishiness isn’t always bad but being overly selfish can create a bad image for themself.
