Why Communicating Your Feelings is Important

“Talking about your feelings is like sunlight for the soul,” as Brené Brown wisely said, “Vulnerability is not winning or losing; it’s having the courage to show up and be seen when we have no control over the outcome.” This quote shows discussing your feelings and embracing them is essential to creating an actual bond with one another. When you can openly share your feelings you won’t only strengthen your relationship but also have a way better understanding.

Talking about your feelings is crucial to having good communication. In Shakespeare’s play Othello, the consequences of Othello’s failure to communicate his feelings lead to a breakdown in trust and allow for miscommunication, which ultimately causes devastating consequences. Ohello being lied is in shock “Lie with her? Lie on her? We say “Lie on her” when they belie her. Lie with her that’s fulsome!” (Act 4 Scene 1 line 45) This shows how important communication is in resolving issues and maintaining healthy relationships. You can see that Othello is purely distressed and angry that he can’t trust his wife. While Iago is putting lies inside of Othello’s head, Othello instead of talking about how he feels to Desdemona doesn’t talk about his feelings, and in the end, he had all of his feelings bottled up and made him react in an inhuman way.

Moreover, the Dunning-kruger effect emphasizes the importance of acknowledging someone’s emotions.” when a person’s lack of knowledge and skills in a certain area cause them to overestimate their own competence” When people overestimate themselves, thinking they know what they need they might mistakenly believe there is no need for them to talk about their feelings.

In contrast, The Mojave phone booth shows the desire for connection for people to be interested in what they like.” The booth was removed in 2000, but people kept coming.” Even though the booth was removed people still kept on coming in memory of it showing the feelings they had towards it. Even in anonymity people seek to find common interests, people share the need to share their experiences and emotions. Talking about your feelings one-on-one with someone can make you scared. But the conversations you must have promote a sense of understanding among yourself.

Embracing the discomfort of discussing feelings openly is a huge aspect of personal growth. It helps strengthen your relationship with others and helps you engage in more honest conversations, making your whole world more understandable.
