The Problem With Little Sins

There is a true story about a plane going from New Zealand to Antarctica to go sightseeing. Unfortunately, the pilots didn’t know that the plane’s course was off by just 2 degrees, causing them over time to go off course. Sadly for the pilots and all of the passengers, this tiny little mistake ended up crashing the plane into a mountain, killing everyone on board the plane. This story is a very good way to show how little mistakes, or sins, can end up having much larger consequences than one might think. Throughout their entire lives, many people commit small little sins in their lives. Most of the time these sins don’t really amount to much, but sometimes they can. Sins can have a much bigger impact on our lives than we think.

In Othello, Emilia gives Iago Desdemona’s handkerchief. She had stolen it from Desdemona because she knew that Iago wanted it so badly. She had no idea what would come from this tiny little sin. Since she gave this handkerchief to Iago, he was able to put the handkerchief in Cassio’s room. Cassio gave the handkerchief to Bianca and Othello ended up seeing this. Because of this tiny little handkerchief, Othello accuses Desdemona of cheating on him. He became so mad and ended up killing Desdemona. Emilia also ends up getting killed because of her actions. (Othello text).

Another example of this is in Dante’s Inferno analogy. Commiting small sins can add up and someone could be in any of the “Circles of Hell.” The people can end up getting stuck with punishments for the rest of their lives for committing small sins. (Dante’s Inferno). Most of the people don’t even realize they are accumulating all of these tiny little sins.

In the Mojave Phone Booth, the person ended up finding the phone booth in the middle of nowhere. After a little while he found out that a person actually lived out there and needed to use the phone booth. He later posted something online about the phone booth and lots of people started calling the phone. Eventually after the noise got so out of hand, the National Park Service took the phone booth away. (Mojave Phone Booth). The little sin he committed was posting the phone booth online, which doesn’t really seem like that big of a deal. However, this tiny little sin ended up getting rid of a family’s only source of contact with the outside world. This example shows how people could possibly not even know what they are doing wrong until it is too late.

People have to be aware of all of the little sins they commit in their lives. In reality, most of them won’t have much of an effect on anything, but there is always a decent chance that they will. No matter what, people should always be aware of the possible consequences of their actions.
