Being influenced or manipulated are very similar actions with very different meanings and perception. Influence is the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself. The difference is manipulation is the exercise of harmful influence over others. These things might not seem important or significant but it is, they can decide if someone is with you or against you. This probably happens more often then not but you just don’t notice it until it happens. This pops up in Othello where the idea of manipulation vs. influence comes in place in many different ways in the whole play. Examples are when Iago manipulates Roderigo saying that he can help him get with Desdamona for money but doesn’t really want to help he just wants the money and enjoyment of seeing other argue and fight. This also happens with Cassio and Othello when they are manipulated by Iago. Manipulation is betrayal and selfish. We know this because Iago did this to set up Cassio and Othello for his sake. Another thing that happened was everyone listened to Iago because he was high ranking/ he was Othello’s ancient. Everyone thought he was a good and trustworthy guy just like Roderigo did. Roderigo thought that Iago would help due but due to his lack of knowledge about Iago (Dunning Kruger Effect), he ended getting betrayed and killed by Iago after all.
