Writing Response #1: (Writing Strategy of Symbol) – Tree
Present Tree
Green was all around me. The gusts of winds were pushing against my face. I felt at peace. It was my birthday and I got to spend the whole day with my friends.
Two hours before the incident occured, my friends yelled out, “Let’s bike to the park!” Everyone agreed to that idea and all thought it would be a good idea. There were only three bikes, so my other two friends had to run. They were both on track, so we thought it was fine.
“What’s taking you so long!” I yelled back, while I sped past them in my electric bike. The three of us, Kenneth, Nikki, and I thought to ourselves that it would be a good idea to leave them behind running to the park. Little did we know, it would come back to haunt us in the future. Once we reached the park, we called our friends.
“Hello? Hello? Hello?” I repeated to the phone as it was ringing. Voicemail after voicemail, I finally gave up. 10 seconds later, we got a call from one of the two friends.
“Help!” A muffled voice in the background yelled out.
“Where are you!” I exclaimed.
“I don’t know, all I see is a tree with presents hanging off from it.”
The sound of bark screeching started getting more prominent as I walked past the playground. My heart started trembling and my skin became dry.
“Boo!” My two friends yelled out. It turns out that they planned a surprise for me, and wanted to scare me first. They had put presents all around the tree for me. I hugged all four of them with tears in my eyes. This tree has always been very sentimental to me since.
Writing Response #2 (Importance of family)
The Family Fighter
“Get on the floor before I beat you up!” A faint voice yells out from around the alley. I glance over the corner, and I see three big men around my small 5 foot 5 brother.
“Get away from my brother before I do something to you guys!” I yell at them with a strong manly voice. I never really had a strong connection with my brother, but something urged me to jump in. The three guys did not back down, so I did not either. I used my skills in the various fighting styles I know, muay thai, wing chun, and boxing to take all three down without breaking a sweat. Ever since then, my 19-year-old brother listened to everything I say and respects everything that I do.

Writing Response #3: (Superstition)
The Juice of Love
My mom always had a way to prevent any sickness I had. However, she never gave me any medicine or pills. One time, I had the flu, and she knew exactly how to stop it.
“Shawn! Come drink this candy water,” she yelled from downstairs.
When I came to drink it, the taste was horrendous. The different flavors of cherry, blueberry, strawberry, mango, and pineapple did not sit well within my mouth. I threw up right after.
“It’s okay to throw up, just drink it all.” My mom told me.
In the past, all the things she told me to do would always help my sickness, so I trusted her. I managed to gulp down most of it. However, once I went to bed, my temperature skyrocketed up to 103 degrees.
I told my mom, “I thought this was going to help me.” That night, I barely managed to go to sleep. The next morning, I felt the same. The 103 degrees fever dropped down to 99 degrees, but I still did not feel better. Mom mom reassured me that it would only last half a day more. I layed in bed until that time came. Miraculously, she was right, and I listened to all her strange treatments all the time.
Writing Response #4: (Benefits of Staying Inside)
Full Boxed
For 15 hours a day, everyday for summer, I would stay inside to play Fortnite. The day I won it all was the day my life changed.
“Mom! I won!” I ran screaming down the stairs in joy. I had just won a Fortnite tournament with a three million dollar prize pool with my two teammates Nikki and Kenneth. My mom looked at me with a puzzled look. She didn’t care one bit.
“Mom I won! Don’t you care?” I said with a tear coming down my face.
“I will only care if you get all A’s!” My mom yelled at me with a straight face. I went to the bank to deposit my money. I was eager to show my mom how Fortnite was beneficial to us. Later that day, I drove home in my brand new Lamborghini and a mansion that I had just bought for my friends and I.
Writing Response #5: (Quitting School)
The Old Hawk
My mom would always tell me not to let my flaws stop me from achieving my dreams. This was over 40 years ago when I had just started playing basketball and made my middle school team.
“You’re never gonna get anywhere! You can’t even shoot a free throw!” My coach at the time yelled at me after I had just missed the game-winning shot. I told myself that I would never forget this moment and would make it big in the future. Now that I was 56 years old, I thought I was too old to reach my dreams.
A faint voice in the back of my head whispered softly, “Soar your wings.” This was the motivation I needed. I woke up at 4:30AM every morning to go to the gym and train. The time of the year when the NBA hosted their combine came around. I told myself that there was no stopping now and just went for it. All the hard work I spent training was not going to go to waste. I did amazing during the combine and got all the coaches’ praises. A month later, the moment I was either going to have it all, or have nothing at all came. The day of the NBA draft was here.
“The 50th pick from the Los Angeles Lakers, Lebron James!” The voices from the TV said. I felt hopeless.
I thought it was over for me until finally I heard the best news of my life, “From Fountain Valley, California, the Golden State Warriors select Shawn Pham!” My three kids and my wife yelled out with happiness. Although I was older than all the coaches, I would still strive to be the best.
