Happy Holidays

Why not that one?

Christmas time was always the best season of the year. Not only do you get that feeling that’s unexplainable, but you get to devour  great food and receive presents from family members, friends, and loved ones. I refuse to believe there is nothing to love about Christmas. However, expectations can differ from reality sometimes. When it comes to presents, I am particularly picky with a lot of what I receive. I would rather not receive anything than receive something I don’t want or need. It’s not that I don’t like it, but I feel as if it’s a waste of money. What’s the point of buying a form of entertainment when it doesn’t bring any happiness?

“Hey son, are you ready for Christmas this year?”

“Of course I am Dad, I’m always ready for Christmas.”

“You’ll be surprised what I got for you this Christmas, it’s going to blow your mind away.”

I thought to myself, is this the present? It suddenly hit. THIS IS THE ONE I’VE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THE WHOLE YEAR. HE MUST HAVE GOT THE CLUES.  I was deceived…

Christmas Day had fallen upon us and I sat by the bright Christmas Tree. Patiently waiting for my turn, nothing but the thought of my dad’s gift was present. Then, I felt a warm touch on my shoulder. I ripped the wrapping paper to shreds and I was left with a simple brown box. Lifting the lid, my face was met with disappointment. A Nintendo Switch. I thought it was going to be a Play Station 5. What is this?

“Merry Christmas buddy.”

“Thanks….dad.”I didn’t want to show any sign of ungratefulness, so I just smiled and hugged him. It wasn’t his fault, he was just trying to make me happy. At the end of the day, I found myself lying on my bed to stare at the top of my dark ceiling. Out of boredom, my hands gripped the controls on each end of the OLED screen and my face had turned bright. I smirked, maybe this isn’t so bad afterall.

God’s Gift

The tree of dreams. No one could understand why we upgraded every year, but it was something we unconsciously did. The pine needles that stuck out were like shots of tequila; appetizing and dangerous. Each one of them had their own personality. Some needles were longer than others and some were darker. Sometimes, we sat and wandered by the tree. The decor gleamed in the darkened room and the reflection gave a glimpse of our future. The train circling around the placemat sang songs and carried our favorite characters from Disneyland. It was the cherry on top of a dessert. The ornaments hung from each branch like a bright moon. The presents covered all dull parts of the bottom so nothing was unattended. Full of bright colors and giving the tree disposition, it made it OUR tree.  We could never wake up to the sight of God’s work for granted. It was truly a Christmas Miracle.

The Feeling

Do you ever get the feeling where your heart suddenly beats at a different pace? All of a sudden, your body becomes warm and your eyes light up. Life around you gives a hint of spice, but so sweet when you dig deep. For me, that’s the feeling of Christmas. Throughout the year, no emotions spur inside of me; it’s dead around here. Whenever the winter season comes along, it’s jolly. The lights on top of people’s houses spark interest. The FM 103.5 radio says,

“Coast one oh three point fivahhh”(With a jingle sound effect)

Tis the season to be jolly, my dad would always say.

It’s the time to forgive those who couldn’t forgive themselves and celebrate the most high, Jesus Christ. It’s the time where things speed up and you wish it could last forever. It’s the time where everything is perfect. Why couldn’t it always be like this?

Hot Chocolate

There are many different drinks that give you different emotions. Sometimes, you want a nice frozen drink on a hot summer day, to keep your mind fresh and relaxed. When it rains, a nice cup of hot tea can soothe the shivering goose-bumped skin and dispose of Rudolph’s nose. When it’s windy, a simple glass of water should take care of the dry throat. What should you drink when it’s Christmas time? A decorated cup filled with thick milk chocolate that slips down the throat with eaze. The floating marshmallows add personality, making smiley faces, sad faces, and even angry faces. The smell of bittersweet cocoa beans fills the air and everyone huddles around the fireplace. It connects the people you hate and the people you love together. It’s the only drink you should have during Christmas. Hot Chocolate.

The Love for Each Other

When I was a freshman in highschool, there was a girl I liked. And it was during one of the most romantic seasons, Christmas. Her hair sang poems and hymns, and her eyes were like notes. I couldn’t stop staring at them. She was perfect. Everytime she smiled, my stomach would have butterflies and every time she laughed, it made my world become brighter. I was in class, and my teacher had assigned us homework. While we were doing it, I decided to listen to some Christmas Music to get into the Holiday Spirit. It just so happens that the girl I liked was next door. Last Christmas, by Wham! came on.  I guess my lip singing wasn’t silent enough because she heard me and laughed.

I sang:

Last Christmas, I gave you my heart

But the very next day, you gave it away.

In tune, she teased me by joining in:

This year, to save me from tears

I’ll give it to someone special…

Smiling and blushing, I didn’t want to let this chance get past me:

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart (I gave you mine)

A man undercover but you tore him apart

Smiling back, eyes glittering under the Christmas spirit, she leaned in and kissed.
