“A word of command has made these silent figures our enemies; a word of command might transform them into our friends.”
Actions are stronger than words, and with this, I agree. Words, however, are not useless. A word can sway people in one direction and make people change their thoughts.
Anyone in command has a huge burden on their shoulders. They are in charge of people and their lives. These superiors carry something no one else understands but leaders. This idea can only go so far and is a hopeful way of looking. Because sometimes, humankind can turn into something ugly, something different. A taste of power can drive individuals to do things beyond question and have no one question it. One powerful man can change the course of the world. His will is as great as he wants it to be.
Powerful men have changed the world in simple ways. Their words. Actions and words have been their power. Their words alone have been why many men became soldiers willing to die for honor and their country. Soldiers have followed blindly into wars without a second thought, truly believing the war was honorable and great. Men who have been following idle orders. Without question, they do what their superiors ask. Soldiers have been vessels for their commander’s ideals.
They have pitied men against each other for the sake of money and power; making an invisible threat – silent shadows who lurk in the darkest pits. Leaders have made men hate one another without meeting or ever seeing their enemy, whom they are fighting to the death for. Men in power have made boys and young men fight their war. A command has made wars start and words have ended wars. Men in power have always been dangerous. Soldiers have always been there to make their superiors happy.
War is blind faith in superiors and men in command.
