Curtains of Suffering

Before war, propaganda was spread about how great the times were there and it was portrayed to be able to support the young adults of a country. Going to war is an opportunity for the young to grow and to make the country proud. The common folk who do not go to war only see this patriotic and positive side of war where people fight together and win together.

When stepping into war a person’s world is changed. Physically, someone’s life is in critical danger the moment they step into the trenches. There is no sense of true security in war because you have enemies in all places. Your country’s enemies, other soldiers dragging you down, and the polluted smell of the air are all enemies for you to face. Even back within safe grounds, authorities can be an enemy as well. Abuse of power is common in war. Those with authority will make sure you do the dirty work for them, go to war and fight off the enemies just so those in power can stay tucked away, safe at the back of the lines.

There is no true feeling of safety in war without feeling like you are at risk of danger in any way. The only people who you can sympathize with and truly befriend are the soldiers who stick with you. Only people who know how it feels to be taken advantage of, only those who learn how to fight to stay alive can be your true friends.

But what happens when the dangers of the war get to you? What if you’re dangerously wounded? No matter how good  your defense is in war, there will always be those bullets that are about to hit you at the most critical times and in the most critical places. At this point in time, you aren’t able to go running back home to cry about the pain. No, you have to face the pain like how many soldiers do at the hospital. However, the soldier’s life in the hospital is one filled with unbearable physical and mental pain. There is the pain from the wounds made by weapons and there are wounds which long for peace and warmth. The unbearable suffering of the hostile hospital environment brings people closer and closer to insanity.

“Again beds are empty. Day after day goes by with pain and fear, groans and death-gurgles. Even the Death Room is no use anymore, it is too small; “

Soldiers drop like flies in war, dying from disease, injury, or the failure of the mental battle. In war, all soldiers can do is fight to hope and see another day and make it out to see their families.

So why are so many people being sent to war when in war death and misfortune are the only things that come out for the soldiers? My guess as a common person is because of society’s pressures. I know for sure that I know nothing about war and nothing about the suffering there is to face in the trenches but, I can guess that common people at the time of war also did not know and by seeing all the war propaganda advertising war as a great and patriotic experience may have influenced people to become soldiers. These unlucky people who were signed up for war then had to suffer through all the battle pain, either leaving them dead on the battlefield or gone to rot.
