Hidden Wounds

Once the war is over many soldiers come back to their families harmed or unharmed. Some have been amputated due to traumatic limb injury which has caused them to change their lives. Many veterans are at risk of developing PTSD( Post-traumatic stress disorder). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, re-experiencing symptoms are “Flashbacks-reliving the traumatic event, Recurring memories or dreams, easily startled, and having angry or aggressive outbursts”. These aggressive behavior and stressful situations affect their well-being as it causes them to find something to use to cope with. Some of these things could be the abuse of drugs or alcohol which causes them to be more aggressive. Many saw their friends murdered or injured during the war

After having come back from the war soldiers feel shame, anxiety, or guilt about their experiences and having survived. This is called survivor guilt. Soldiers would have to seek support from friends, and family, or look for mental health professionals to work out their emotional feelings and grief. After coming back from the war many need to find jobs in order to maintain but because of these aggressive behaviors or traumatic experiences, many can’t transition back into civilian life and are left homeless or with their families.
