How do we win a war?

War is a tragic thing. Soldiers hiding in trenches, firing at each other, waiting for the enemy to advance. Warfare was a stalemate. The only achievement waiting on the battlefield was death. For the soldiers, it was only a matter of how, not when you would die.

So then how do you win a war with no winning? Do you win a war by having more ammunition? Better guns? More shells?

Although the resources do play a part in war, what about the soldiers who are fighting? The people who were influenced by their superiors to enlist, the soldiers who were just barely out of highschool. Are those the soldiers who we expect to fight and win the war? Soldiers had to dissociate in order to keep themselves from going insane. Nothing was preparing them mentally. Most soldiers became shell shocked. The same soldiers who were fresh out of highschool, developed a trauma that would last them their entire lifetime.

The soldiers’ will to fight is what determines the outcome. If they keep getting sent into battles with no outcome, they’re open to a counterattack when they’re tired. The constant fighting without gain eats away at the soldiers morale. The lack of morale from the soldiers, signals the end of war.  “When revolutionaries win, it’s because the bulk of those sent to crush them refuse to shoot or just go home.”(The Dawn of Everything). If there is no will to keep fighting, then there is no fight, only a massacre.
