Second Chance: How Life Can be Re-Loved and Lived

Every moment in life should be cherished and protected, being seen as the most important thing in the world to many people. However, life can be difficult to protect. At any point in time, whether someone is old or young, a person’s life can change for the worse or for the better. Life is like a child growing up while a parent cares for them. As a child grows older, they change and develop over time. As time progresses, the parents will try to protect them as much as they can until they are grown, and it becomes more and more difficult to shelter them. Just like in the novel All Quiet on the Western Front, written by Erich Maria Remarque, the main character named Paul, a German soldier, stated how he and many other young men “…were eighteen and had begun to love life and the world, and we had to shoot it into pieces”. Even as a person’s life or love for the world seems like it’s falling apart or coming to an end, how can someone re-learn to love life again?

Life is something you’re born with and you’re only given one. Even if you are unhappy with the life you received or built, you can’t suddenly just switch lives for a better one. You can however, make adjustments to your own life in order to learn to love it again. One way you can do this is by going outside and noticing the things around you. Watch as people live their own everyday lives. See the nature that surrounds you. Appreciate all of the little things in your life. Everything has its purpose and so do you, so find something meaningful to do with your life and make good choices that can positively impact you.

Another way for someone to re-learn to love life is to meet new people. Meeting new people with similar experiences can positively impact a person’s life and give them a reason to keep pushing forward past the challenges they may face. For example, in a film by Akira Kurosawa called Seven Samurai, the farmers in the film lived difficult lives and the only thing they had to live for was to work. However, once they met the samurai, they learned that their lives were more meaningful and gained more control over them.

Life is short and should be lived the way you want it to be. Though it may be hard to protect, finding the best things in life to keep it going are the most valuable of all.
