The new Iron Curtains

To what point are we supposed to go to honour our country, nationalism has been a prominent issue since countries and territories have been a thing. There is nothing wrong in pride or devotion to one’s own country, however when the love for your country comes at the expense of others then you are in the wrong. When we are indoctrinated with the ideas of superiority this leads us to believe we can never do anything wrong, this eliminates the critical thinkers in society. This is why in nationalistic countries oftentimes teachers, professors, students, and the press are targeted in order to focus and continue the ideals of the country. It is not the fault of the people that they believe this for it is all that they know. They are expected to do things even such as sacrifice their life for their country because it is in their eyes for the greater good. This idea can cause issues between nations. Whether it be competition for power, economics, influence, or land. Both countries and populations will be operating under the thought process that they must fulfill whatever task for the good of their nations, neither be willing to step down or accept defeat because they are taught to believe the state can never do wrong because they are the best. This creates 2 very stubborn sides of the argument making diplomatic relations difficult and agreements cannot be met unless it is brought with violence or forced upon another country. This in turn does not fix the issue but rather fills people with more hatred and resentment. Governments will then take advantage of this and use it to further glorify themselves and unite against the enemy in order to retain power and keep the population in check. In these cases people do not sign up to fight to protect their own nation but rather to eliminate the enemy sometimes through almost genocidal methods. It is not right to fight out of pure hatred. Tragically these people often forget that their opponents are in many ways just like them, indoctrinated with the same love for their country as they have. We are in many ways very similar to others so there should be no need for competition between us. Most of us just want ourselves to succeed and live happy lives so instead of competing and fighting we should unite and work together towards this goal.
