As humans, we snap at every chance we get to become better than one another. In the story, “All Quiet on the Western Front”, Paul notes that if we have a chance at more authority, we go for it. “And if you give a man a little bit of authority he behaves just the same way, he snaps at it too.” We might notice authority is a big concept that we just can’t have enough of, but what other things do we snap at?
Similar to authority, something we snap at is strength or power. In “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith”, we watch Anakin Skywalker turn to the dark side to get more power. In the real world, this would be more seen as a strength. We can see this through the amount of people who go to the gym, they all look to gain strength and a better body. Of course, if this process was more instant, anyone would snap at a similar opportunity.
In the movie “The Seven Samurai” we watch Kikuchiyo leave his post to try and get one of the rifles from the bandits. He does this in an attempt to get more recognition from the farmers and the other samurai. Getting approval from the people around us is something we all snap at. Sometimes it can be showing off, but if just one person is watching, you want to perform your best. No one wants a bad image of themselves, and if you could make everyone around you think the way you want them to think about you, anyone would take it.
There are many things an average human snaps at and just some of them are authority, strength, and recognition. None of these are good or bad, it all depends on the way you get it. We can be honest and people will treat you how are. Differently, we can bring people down and make ourselves look better. There are many ways and things we snap at, what do you snap at?
