Desensitization Through War

Does the adrenaline rush of war make everything else boring or monotonous? In short, yes. In war, you are put in many high-risk situations where your adrenaline levels spike and you are much more active. Eventually, soldiers can get used to the feeling of these high-risk situations. After a while, they are always on edge and used to the adrenaline from these situations. Once soldiers go back home and no longer have to be in these life-or-death situations, they are always bored because nothing can give them that adrenaline boost that war gave them. This is demonstrated in Kendrick Lamar’s album Good Kid m.A.A.d City in this album Lamar talks about his life growing up in an area riddled with gang violence and drug abuse. He talks about the things that he as a child had to experience including shootings, robbery, and drug abuse. This can be seen in these lines from the song “m.A.A.d City”, “There was back when I was nine, Joey packed the nine, Pakistan on every porch is fine, we adapt to crime.” This line also shows how people who live in that situation become used to being on edge constantly and what is somewhat unfathomable for us is normal for them.
