Play. It’s usually not a word that we associate with a high school English class. When you think of English class, what usually comes to mind? Writing essays, presentations, grammar, and books with hundreds of pages are usually what is thought of first. But this year, English class has been a different experience. I think that incorporating playful aspects in the classroom makes class a lot more enjoyable and engaging. Instead of expecting a monotonous class every day, for 180 days of the year, there is always something new to expect and look forward to in class.
With play being incorporated into the classroom, I think it allows us students to be able to express ourselves in different ways rather than other classes and brings out the inner child. I appreciate that Mr. Theriault adds playful aspects to this class and makes each lesson engaging and an opportunity to have fun while still learning. Personally, I’ve never particularly felt like a creative person, but the activities that we do in this class have made me bring out that side. Instead of writing essays about a subject, we get into groups and create videos or make projects together. Instead of doing a nerve-wracking presentation alone, we are in groups with our friends. Instead of having a silent reading time, we create friends out of Play-Doh. This year changed my perspective on English class and I hope that Mr. Theriault continues to put play and English class together.
