Originality in Humans

Unique, different, remarkable, special; that’s how the average human being is described. While it might not make sense to some, it has truth in it. The chance of you, me, or anyone being born into this world: “…ten to the thirtieth power…” says astrophysicist and writer Neil Degrasse Tyson; a huge number that just doesn’t make sense. Most people just move on with life, some don’t even know this chance or even believe it. It is so rare to be born that people just don’t know it. That being said, they take life for granted. People will not see the true idea of living because they just don’t know.

What makes a human different from another organism? Biologically, we are different. What makes a human different from another human? Is it their physical features? We do look different, but we’re still human. What makes a human a human? In my history class, I learned of this idea that the Renaissance, a cultural movement through the 15th century and 16th century that worked its way across Europe, influenced men to create. That idea is individualism. The Renaissance men as distinct individuals, worked their life following this idea. It deals with self-guidance, or self-improvement. They lived how they wanted to, while also changing themselves for the better. That is what makes a human different than any other human; it’s the idea of life changing its course each day, adapting to this change, and residing with it.

That individuals are unique means that they are capable of unique things. In a podcast, “Games,” the idea of novelty is mentioned, when a new move was discovered in a chess game. Novelty is the essence of originality and uniqueness. It is something that has neither occurred nor been thought of. Through self-guidance, through self- improvement, through individualism, one may find this concept of novelty. That they discover who they are, they will discover what it means to live and their main goal of life. I believe that is the aspect of life; to be different and original, and create something new in the world.
