The idea of mental health and play has been lost over many years. Many believe that mental health can just be shrugged off and not thought of, but it is essential.
My school has implemented the idea of Baron Play Day. On this day, the school allows students to take a rest from their classes and just play. The school provides fun games like ping pong, bean bag toss, and many more. They also provide animals to cheer students up. In a Ted Talk by Dr. Peter Gray, he mentions that “Play … is the single most significant factor in determining our success and happiness.” Play is embedded into our brains; if we are deprived of play, we lose many skills. In the Ted Talk, He mentions that depriving children of play is very similar to animals. It leads to negative effects that social and emotional impacts on the person. Implementing a well-spaced room and giving mental health days for students is crucial. Students now have a resource such as the zen/well-space room to go to in times of need, and students can now look forward to playdays or mental days. It gives students a break from reality and just lets them play, regaining their proper skills to succeed in life.
As a student myself, I believe that the school made the right choice by adding Baron Play Day. It gives the students much-needed rest and personally, I hope more teachers allow their students to participate more often.
