Once upon a time there was a little boy named Zack. Well, he was a high schooler but his body was small. He was short and extremely skinny. Freshman year had just ended and Zack had a dream to compete on the football team his sophomore year. Zack didn’t just want to compete on frosh or jv. He wanted to have a starting spot on varsity. One day Zack went over to his best friend Tanner’s house for dinner and a sleepover. At the dinner table, Zack talked to Tanner about his big aspirations to play on the team. Tanner, who played on the school’s Super Smash Bros team just laughed and made fun of him, saying he was way too small and unathletic. Even Tanner’s mom and little sister were laughing. Zack felt so sad that he wanted to cry. Everyone at the table was laughing at Zack, except for Tanner’s dad, Craig. He just looked at Zack with a stern face. Zack always thought Craig was a mysterious person. He was the only one of Zack’s friends’ dads that Zack didn’t know what they did for work. Zack thought he might be a spy or something. Later that night, while he was playing Smash Bros with Tanner, Craig came into the room and told Zack to follow him downstairs and into the garage. Skeptically, Zack followed him through the garage door and into the biggest garage he had ever seen. All over the garage there were fitness machines, dumbbells, and everything someone would need to work out. Craig told Zack that his job was a personal fitness trainer and he did everything in his own garage. He told Zack that he wanted to train him the whole summer. Craig said it wouldn’t be easy, but he could get Zack on the varsity football team. Zack was absolutely stoked to be able to do some sort of training for football. Craig said every single weekday at 7 a.m. he needed to come over for a two hour workout. Zack agreed and went back upstairs. As he was about to go into Tanner’s room, Craig shouted up that he would need full commitment from Zack. Zack let the words sink in and agreed with him. The next morning, Zack came over at 7:02 and Craig was sitting outside waiting for him. He was furious and said he needed him to come on time. He told Zack that he needed to do 100 push ups for every minute he was late, after their workout. The workout was the hardest Zack had ever done, plus he had to do the push ups after. Zack was never late again. Every day for the whole summer Zack went over and trained with Craig. Surprisingly to Zack, he was getting strong and the workouts were getting easier. He was no longer the skinny Zack at the beginning of summer. When summer was finally over and the football tryout was happening, Zack actually looked jacked. He had also gotten fast from the training, and the coaches noticed this. It turned out that being short worked in his favor when playing running back, and he figured that would be his main position. The coaches loved how strong he was paired with his speed and decided to put him on varsity. Zack was so excited and immediately ran over to tell Craig that he made varsity and thanked him for all of the work he had helped force him to do. Craig just smiled and went back inside thinking about the job well done.
