Meaning
This is a one page comic in the shape of a dreamcatcher.
It highlights the typical childhood fantasies—
The ones where you wake up to a strange noise at night…
Where you decide to investigate the noise, following it to somewhere within your house…
Only to find a mysterious portal that leads you into some fantasy land.
You meet new characters, discover a whole new world, make new friends, make new enemies…
Go on quests, learn valuable lessons, traverse the seas, forge unforgettable memories…
And save the entire realm…
All in one night.
You eventually have to say goodbye, to the world that existed for just a fleeting moment.
To all those you have met; to all those you have shared a lifetime’s adventure with.
To leave it all behind, a bittersweet farewell…
You finally crawl back into bed and fall asleep.
The next morning your memory is fuzzy…
Was it a dream..?
We will see, we will see next night…
Design
This comic is shaped as a dreamcatcher, for dreams are the provenance of a child’s wildest fantasies. Its circular composition serves as a cycle with no clear end or beginning—sometimes a fantasy that lives on or a fantasy that is cut short.
The lack of imagery allows the reader to imagine the world for themselves; every house, every character, every landmark… every fantasy is unique to one’s own mind.
What makes a fantasy a fantasy is the stark contrast between reality and imagination. Half of the dreamcatcher is near pitch black—the part that takes place at night in the house is a dim reality. The other half is white (bright), and colorful, and a place you’d definitely want to be in—a perfect escape from reality.
There are some panels–or fragments, of the dreamcatcher colored completely black or white in contrast to its background. These represent the gaps in each reality, meaning that there is never a true escape from the worlds in which we exist.
