Emily Davison

Something that has recently been in my thoughts is a lady named Emily Davison. Emily was a suffragette activist from the early 1900’s. She along with many other women during that time were fighting for the right to vote. However, Emily sticks out among others because of her willingness to the cause, she was so devoted to the cause that she even died for it. On June 4th, 1913, at the Epsom Derby, she threw herself in front of the King’s horse which led to her death. Before the accident, she had said, “The idea in my mind was that one big tragedy may save many others,” her “tragedy” changed many women’s lives and allowed for more people to see and understand that women deserve the right to vote.

This is not an issue that is a problem for most women in the world right now. However, this story empowers me to not let anyone take away my rights as a human being and to fight back against prejudice. It reminds me that I have the choice on whether or not I will let my rights be taken, and whether or not I will let others be mistreated. It also reminds me to remember those who came before me and fought for the amazing, free world we have today. To not take it for granted, and to help others who are not as fortunate as us to receive the same rights and chances as we are. I believe that Emily Davison is an inspiration to me and I aspire to become as she was.
