Life in Panels

A story is an imaginative piece of writing which captures the reader’s attention and interest with ideas and details that are more extreme than our world. However I believe that the real beauty of a story is not to capture the extremes, but to emanate aspects of our world into the story. A comic is a great way to express this without words because the details that an author makes can say more than what a page of words can ever say.

In this comic that I made, I wanted to represent the idea that you are not the same to anyone, not even yourself. I decided to represent this through comedy and drama masks because it is a clear way to show emotion. The idea behind it is that you yourself is a blank slate, with no specific expression to it. Your thoughts are how you think of yourself, which in this case is hiding your pain under a mask of joy. The way you talk about yourself is how you want to appear to others, which in this is both joyous, but also littered with pain. But the water drop is the way you are perceived by others, which in this is insecure and unsure. I think this is a good showing of the nature of humans and the way they express themselves both to others and to themselves as well.

The comic I chose to be the mentor panel for this comic is Jojo’s bizarre adventure. I chose this because Jojo and its author Araki like to show the world and its supernaturals in a way that represents nature. In this panel of jojo It is an explanation on fibonacci’s spiral which gave me inspiration to create a comic based on math. I recently learned about related rates which gave me the idea to incorporate that into the comic. But I kept the golden ratio in respect to the original panel. This combines both my own daily life and showing nature in the form of a cone.

In both comics I chose to express aspects of life in a more abstract way by expressing it through a wordless comic of masks, or by a simple math lesson. It shows how just a mere few pictures can convey so much more than words can. In these two comics I have applied these principles to create what I would say is the true purpose of a comic.
