These Walls

“I said do you wanna, do you wanna be, happy

I said do you wanna, do you wanna be, free”

“We are gathered here today to mourn the deaths of the… family… killed in a tragic accident… survived by their oldest son…”

Money, time, and the fear of losing them. These barriers, these walls, slowly pressure him into his room. He sees drugs, sex, and alcohol as his escape from these walls and abuses them to hide the pain, but ultimately just creates more.

“Abusin’ my power, full of resentment

Resentment that turned into a deep depression

Found myself screamin’ in a hotel room”

Intoxicated with rage and angry at his problems, he screams at his family with all the energy he has left expecting a reaction, but finds none.

“Block gets shot, the streets is cold”

“Please say something, I’ll do anything,” he pleads. He hears unfamiliar voices surrounding him.

“I said do you wanna, do you wanna be, happy

I said do you wanna, do you wanna be, free”

“If these walls could talk”

“Walls telling me they full of pain, resentment”

Completely lost, he feels completely alone, except for the voices that drone on endlessly.

“Who are you?” he asks the voices.

“I said do you wanna, do you wanna be, free

Free from pain, free from scars

Free to sing, free from bars”

Through self reflection, he realizes that the walls were just as broken as him.

“These walls want to cry tears

These walls happier when I’m here

These walls never could hold up

Every time I come around, demolition might crush”

He wants to be free from these walls, but something keeps him anchored to them: the ghosts of his family. He realizes the only way to be free is let go of the past and move on with his life.

“If your walls could talk, they’d tell you it’s too late

Your destiny, accept it, your fate”

So he thinks introspectively, seeking to be free.

“Free to love, to each his own

Free from bills, free from pills”

For the first time since the accident, he is able to make the journey out of his room, and escapes the walls to make new memories.

These walls: money, time, and desires are not evil. It is just greed and fear that corrupt them. These walls are important aspects of life and whether they are obstacles are completely controlled by the self.

He contemplates his life now seeing that the walls do not control it. With his self actualization, he is able to achieve his dreams free from fear.

“They say that dreams come true

And when they do, that there’s a beautiful thing”

Although he makes new friends and a new family he never forgets where he started.

“Life get hard, you eat your soul

It clears your mind, learn to fly

Then reach the stars, you take your time

To look behind and say, ‘look where I came’

‘Look how far I done came’”

He still regularly visits his family’s graves, but with love, not sadness.

“If these walls could talk”
