Only the Present Makes us Happy

What gets me through my daily challenges? There are a lot of things that get me through the daily challenges. Most people my age would usually say that high school sports or their ranks clubs help them get them through their day. But, one important thing to me is that I don’t compare myself to other people. I do what I want to do. Right now, one challenge that I am going through is that I am having trouble with math. I have always been good at math. But, this year I don’t seem to be doing as well. I understand the concepts, but I just don’t do well on the tests. I try not to stress too much on this problem because I know if I study enough, I will start doing good. But, with all this studying comes stress. I try to get release this stress through other activities that I enjoy.

This is how I feel like my mind is when I am thinking about my past and future

Basketball

One of the things that help me get through these tough daily challenges is basketball. It has been my escape from stress for most of my life. I grew up playing basketball. I may not be good at it, but I really enjoy playing the sport. Basketball allows me to just focus on what is happening in the present without dwelling on the past or future. Oftentimes, the past or future stresses me out. In basketball, I only have to think whether I should shoot or the opponents next move. This is very simple compared to real life where I have to think about what I am going to in the future or the mistakes I have made in the past. Also, Basketball has allowed me to meet great friends that I wouldn’t have met if I didn’t play basketball. I enjoy the friendly competition that it brings. I may not be on the high school basketball team, but I don’t care. The reason I play basketball is to have fun and I have fun playing at the park or at Boys and girls club.

Basketball gives me a sense of clarity.

Scouts

Being a scout helps me tremendously in getting through any challenge life throws at me. It has taught me so many crucial life lessons that help me daily. But, the most crucial lesson that I have learned is that it is okay to make mistakes. This lesson has made my life so much easier. I used to try to be a perfect person who didn’t make mistakes. When I did make mistakes, I would be very hard on myself and would make my life harder by dwelling on that mistake. Now, I try to learn from my mistakes and that makes my life 100% easier. Also, scouts has given me friends that will last a life time. These friends have gone through many of the same challenges I have and that gives me a sense of companionship. They often guide me through my problems as most of them are my seniors. Lastly, it helps me connect with my cultural background. Scouts is all about honoring my ancestors, the Vietnamese flag, and the laws and oaths we take in Vietnamese. I am glad to be part of something with so much history

Conclusion

In conclusion, things like scouts and basketball help me get my mind off of the stressful things in my life. They help me get my mind in the present and not the future. This ultimately helps me get through the day and help me rise to beat my challenges.
