Hello, my name is Ian and I am a student at Fountain Valley High School. When I was little, I really enjoyed reading comics and I still do to this day.
One of the comics I am currently reading and enjoying is the manga series called The Eminence in Shadow. This fantasy manga copies the same generic trope that many other fantasy mangas follow. The story’s main character ends up being transported into another world where he gains powers and becomes extremely powerful. This story trope has been repeated so many times that when manga readers think of the fantasy genre, they think of this trope. Despite following this overused cliche, The Eminence in Shadow manages to put its own unique spin on it and use it to make an exciting and entertaining story.

The story understands that the plot and tropes it follows aren’t exactly original or unique, in fact, it’s quite the opposite. It takes this knowledge and uses it to create a story that is like it is making fun of the cliches that it is built on. The characters, story arcs, and underlying plot can almost be considered parodies of the other fantasy mangas that follow the same generic cliches.

The Eminence in Shadow is not a masterpiece that makes its readers teary-eyed or overwhelmed by emotion. However, it is fun. It’s not a comic where in order to enjoy the story, the reader has to pay attention to every little detail or even fully understand everything that is going on. The main character is not a masterfully written character that will be used as an example of how to write a well-developed protagonist in the future. However, the protagonist is likable, relatable, and the strange situations he gets himself into are always either hilarious or keep the reader wondering what is going to happen next.
